 PINOYLINK: Linking with Overseas Filipinos for Sustainable Social Development and Change (supported by the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium) I. Background and rationale Through the years, Filipino migrants have maintained and fostered links with their places of origin by creating hometown associations (HTAs) and other organizations to help them adjust in their new locations. These organizations later on evolved into philanthropic units funding small-scale development projects through their collective remittances to support their places of origin and to maintain relationships with their local communities. In this way, overseas Filipinos (OFs) retain a sense of community while they reside or work in a foreign land. |

Background More than 8 million Filipinos work or live overseas. They constitute about 10% of the Philippine population and 22% of the Philippine labour force. Their remittances support about 40 million Filipinos or nearly half the population. Families and the country's economy have become increasingly dependent on migration and migrants' remittances. |
